Lip Anatomy

Lip tissue is different from the skin in the rest of the face. The soft tissue of the lips is constantly subject to mechanical stress due to high muscle activity and pressure from the surrounding environment.

In addition, the lip mucosa does not retain water in the same way as other skin tissue nor does it contain the same amount of glands or pigmentation as skin on the rest of the face. The lips are therefore more susceptible to dehydration.
The lips, unlike the eyes and nose have no solid structure to attach to. This combined with the many muscles intented to stretch and move the mouth in various motions makes the lips the most variable feature of the face.
Because of the high muscle activity, the proximity to the wet mucosa, their neuron density (making them a very sensitive organ), as well as rich vasularization, the lips are a very delicate area to inject.
They swell markedly when bruised, cut or hit and react quite unpredictably in general. The presence of lipocytes is less prominent while the orbicularis oris muscle greatly influences the shape of the lips. In addition it is also a very complex three-dimensional structure with many pitfalls when aiming for an optimal result. The dry mucosa of the lip is much thinner than the dermis in the rest of the face. This makes it less suitable for injection. Instead, the submucosal layer under the dry mucosa is the most suitable region to inject the two new lip products.
The two new Restylane products for lips – Restylane Lip Volume and Restylane Lip Refresh – are designed both to improve integration into the sensitive lip tissue as well as to withstand rapid degradation.

A kiss of youth regardless of age

Regardless of whether we were born with well defined lips or not, the quality of our lips change with time.  As we grow older, thinning skin, loss of muscle support, changes in bone structure, bone resorption and reductions in soft tissue volume lead to a number of changes in the perioral region. Inevitably the ring-like orbicularis oris muscle flattens with ageing and atrophies making the lip thinner and less shapely. Visually, the ageing lip is characterised by the decrease in vermilion show, blunting of the Cupid’s bow, and an attenuated white roll, i.e. vermilion border.
In addition, due to muscle hyperactivity, marionette lines may form over time, along with perioral lines or smoker’s lines. As a result, ageing-related changes in the perioral region may lead to a person, often incorrectly, being assessed as “sad”. In most cultures, this is equated with a less attractive, less youthful and less desirable appearance.
